Reading resources for young English learners

A collection of great resources to inspire reading in English

Reading is an essential skill for all language learners, and is one of the best ways to encourage discussion, build vocabulary and teach any topic you can possibly imagine! This collection of reading resources for young English learners will provide hours and hours of practice on their learning journey.

Children should be able to read at least 90% to 95% of the words in a text easily. If your child is struggling with a story, look for a simpler one.

You could also start a notebook of new vocabulary that you meet in each story. Try writing the new word or phrase, adding a little explanation or drawing fun pictures to help them to memorize their new words!

Kids vs Life – Is your child struggling with phonics? This channel has some of the best phonics teaching stories available online, as well as fun songs and even drawing lessons! A must have for all young learners.

Online book collections

Oxford Owl for School and Home – Register for a free account and get access to a wonderful collection of stories for children and young people. You can even sort the books by reading level, to help find the perfect book for your child.

YouTube reading channels

Clover Reading – A superb collection of stories for younger learners, from super simple stories for early beginners, to more challenging favourite texts for more confident learners!
Little Fox – Kids Songs and Stories – Songs, stories and more for young learners. A fun, engaging, colorful and high quality collection of videos.
Reading Pioneers Academy – Online stories from around the world. Perfect for shared reading with your child!
